Population growth in Qatar has lead to the current shortage in housing supply, which has caused rents to spiral. Bilfinger Berger has won a US $1.3 billion (QR4.8 billion) contract to build the first phase of Barwa City in Qatar.
The turnkey package includes the construction of 128 low-rise residential buildings with a gross floor area of 850,000m2 and related infrastructure. Located on the outskirts of Doha, Barwa City will be home to more than 25,000 people in more than 6,000 units by 2010.
Beilfinger Berger, is installing 20,150 m3 of Stormwater Attenuation system. The system is divided into 38 individual tanks located at strategically collection points. Due to the site terrain and location of these tanks, the tanks have to be 2.650mts high and modules need to buried at a variable depth from 2.4 mts up to 4.5mts in some instances.
One of the key requirements in addition to high vertical and lateral load bearing capacity of the modules was to provide linier access to the tank for flushing and maintenance.
Modules being supplied on this project are the heavy duty tanks which have an unconfined vertical load bearing capacity of 40 ton/m2
The project started in March 2008 and the tanks are scheduled to be installed by early part of 2009.
